The first applications are running, the organization believes in low-code and the foundation is in place. In the Structure phase, you have built standards, teams and a solid Mendix Competence Center. But now it's time to move forward: Scale.
In this phase, you make the leap from "a few good solutions" to an organization-wide approach. It's no longer just about developing new apps, but about continuing to deliver value, at scale. Repeatable, efficient and aligned with your broader digital strategy. This is what you've laid the groundwork for.
From acceleration to maturity
Where the Start phase was about momentum and Structure was about stability, Scale is about agility at scale. You no longer build individual solutions, but an ecosystem of applications and components that moves with your organization.
What makes the difference in this regard? Smart reuse. Of components, processes and knowledge. Instead of building each application from scratch, you work with proven building blocks. Think of generic modules for authorization, logging or user management. Developed well once, then applicable endlessly.
So you build faster and more consistently. And you reduce your maintenance burden, increase your quality and make the step from IT-dependent to business-driven development.
An organization-wide playing field
In the Scale phase, you move from project-based development to portfolio management at a much larger level. This requires clear prioritization, performance monitoring and central direction. Your Mendix Competence Center again plays a key role in this: as manager of components, as coach of teams and as quality controller of the overall landscape.
There is also a growing need for insight. What are you steering for? Which apps deliver real value? Who is using what and how? In this phase, performance dashboards are indispensable. Not only for IT, but also for the business: steering information that provides insight into usage, performance and impact. This allows you to make adjustments based on facts.
Case study: scalable growth with reusable building blocks
At a national service provider with dozens of operating companies, the desire arose to digitize local processes. Think of order processing, invoicing and service notifications, processes that run slightly differently for each company.
In the Structure phase, the organization had already built a number of apps. However, when demand increased, they got stuck: each new application meant rebuilding, testing, tuning. That takes time and is not efficient.
Together with The New Wave IT, we further developed the Competence Center. We looked at the common denominator in processes and set up a set of generic components: build well once, then apply widely. Within six months, the number of applications had tripled without doubling the management.
At the same time, dashboards were built based on Mendix Data Hub and external BI tools, giving each operating company real-time insight into performance, wait times and error rates. The impact? Shorter lead times, less manual work and much greater adoption within the organization.
The 5 Ps in Scale: compactly summarized
In this final phase, the 5 Ps remain leading, but with a different goal: optimizing your digital operation.
- People: teams work autonomously, but according to shared standards. Coaching from the Competence Center prevents proliferation.
- Process: Development lanes are automated, CI/CD is mature. Feedback loops are short and structural.
- Platform: landscape is standardized and components are centrally managed. You can safely accelerate.
- Portfolio: the focus shifts from "build what is requested" to "develop what contributes strategically.
- Promotion: successes are shared to reinforce commitment as well as drive new initiatives.
This is not the end station; this is where it only begins
With Scale, you complete the first phase of digital transformation. The organization is now working broadly with Mendix, new apps are emerging faster than ever, and the Competence Center is acting as a catalyst.
But it doesn't stop here. After Scale, the real work only begins: continuous improvement, innovation, optimization. The basics are in place, but the world changes and the organization changes smoothly with it.
Digital transformation is not a project, but a way of working. And that starts with the right foundation, grows through structure and accelerates through scale.
