Every release sounds bigger than the last. But what do you actually notice when you work with the platform every day? An honest assessment from a Mendix developer in the field.

Every few months, Mendix rolls out a new version. And each time, the announcement sounds even bigger than the last. More AI. More speed. More possibilities. But what does a release like this really mean when you’re working with the platform every day? And, more importantly, what does it mean for you as an IT manager or CIO?
As a Mendix Developer at The New Wave IT, I work with the platform every day. I build, test, and deploy, and see what works and what doesn’t. Mendix 11.9 includes a number of features that I find immediately relevant to the projects we’re working on. But I’m also honest about what’s still too early to rely on.
Here's what I think about it.

Agents as an integral part of your app model
Mendix integrates AI agent development directly into Studio Pro. Agents can be linked to microflows, version control, and other model elements, just as you’re used to. It’s not a separate module, but an integral part of your application.
My honest opinion? The AI hype is really taking off. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Mendix is making concrete strides in this area. The technology is there, the integration is well thought out, and they’re heading in the right direction.

What I find interesting is that agents are now “first-class citizens” on the platform. You no longer build them as separate modules that are tacked on somewhere, but as an integral part of your app. That makes it much more manageable and future-proof for developers. For most customers, this is still a long way off, but we’re keeping a close eye on it.

An agent will only take action once a user approves it. For each tool, you can configure whether the agent acts transparently and whether there is a human veto. This is crucial for organizations that want to use AI but do not want to relinquish responsibility.
For public organizations, this is not a luxury. It is a requirement. AI without human oversight is not an option in the public sector. Decisions must be accountable, and processes must remain auditable.

The feature that does offer immediate value: PWA Wrapper
PWA Wrapper — Beta
Mendix apps in the App Store, without native development
The PWA Wrapper makes it possible to distribute a Mendix PWA through both the Apple App Store and Google Play. Mendix builds and maintains the wrapper. You simply continue working within the platform, without a native codebase or complex build pipelines.
Of all the features in Mendix 11.9, this is the most tangible benefit for me. And the reason is simple: we received this request directly from a customer.
The question was how to better manage business phones and which apps should be installed on them by default. A PWA in the app store would make that possible: central deployment, easy management, and still a native experience for the end user.

The PWA Wrapper offers the ability to convert an existing Mendix PWA into an app store version. This allows an organization to better manage what is pre-installed on company phones. This was a specific request from a customer. Once this beta version becomes stable, it will provide immediate value.

Until now, this wasn't possible without a fully native development process, with all the associated costs and complexity. The PWA Wrapper changes that. It's still in beta, so we're not going to rely on it blindly. But the direction is clear, and there's already demand from the market.
Faster builds: an improvement, not a revolution
Rspack Client Bundler — Improvement
Builds up to 6x faster, 70% less memory
Rspack replaces the current client bundler and significantly speeds up builds for large Mendix applications. For development teams that deploy multiple times a day, this can noticeably shorten the feedback loop.
Honest answer: It can be annoying sometimes when you want to test something quickly and have to wait a bit. But it’s not a daily annoyance or a real roadblock. For larger organizations with extensive application landscapes, this probably makes more of a difference. A faster feedback loop is always better than a slower one. It’s an improvement, but not a game-changer for the scale of our current projects.
Should you upgrade to 11.9 now?
This is the question I get asked most often. And my answer is always the same: no, not right away.
Every new version also has the potential to introduce new bugs or vulnerabilities. You want others to discover them first—not in your production environment.
Rule of thumb: Always use a version that is one behind the latest release, and preferably choose an LTS (Long-Term Support) version. These have been tested, are stable, and receive long-term support.
Do you want to test specific features in version 11.9? Do so in an isolated environment. But don't blindly deploy it to a production environment until the version has been proven stable.
What does this mean for your organization?
Mendix 11.9 is not a revolution. It is a well-thought-out evolution of a platform that clearly knows where it wants to go: integrating AI more deeply, giving developers more autonomy, and seriously facilitating enterprise use.
For IT managers and CIOs who are currently exploring what Mendix can do for them: you’re on the right track. The Agent Editor and Human-in-the-Loop are worth keeping an eye on. The PWA Wrapper is immediately relevant if mobile deployment is on your agenda.
But you don’t get the most value out of a platform by running the latest version. You get value by setting up the platform properly, structuring processes, and involving the right people. That’s where we can help—from strategy to implementation.
